Religious and Non-Religious Narratives on Migration

Editors: Regina Polak, Aybiçe Tosun, and Ansgar Jödicke

This volume analyzes religious and non-religious narratives on migration from an international and interdisciplinary perspective. Narratives shape the perception of migration. The recourse to religion, as well as the self-understanding of religious people and religious communities, plays an important role in this context. As part of the COST Action 2017 “Connecting Theory and Practical Issues of Migration and Religious Diversity”, international researchers from various disciplines – theology, social sciences, philosophy – are exploring contemporary perspectives on migration based on subject-specific understandings of the concept of “narrative” and are also discussing the role and contributions of religion. Particular attention is paid to the original voices of migrants. For this purpose, the innovative method of so-called “narrative cafés” was developed. The volume thus offers numerous insights for critical reflection on migration narratives in academic and socio-political practice.

Databases

Research on Religion and Migration in the European Context

The database compiles over 5,000 academic publications on the intersection of religion and migration in Europe from 1950 to 2024. It serves as a public tool for researchers to explore the development and current state of this field across European countries and globally. Entries include bibliographic details, abstracts, and translations (original or Deepl-generated) for non-English works. The collection highlights often overlooked national-language research and is organised using Zotero software, which allows users to search and filter by country, religion, and topic. The database was prepared by Dr. Eglė Aleknaitė-Škarubskė as part of WG1 activities.

Activities in the Intersection of Migration and Religious Diversity

This comprehensive digital database provides information on stakeholders and organisations working with migration, religious diversity, or both, at national and local levels across EU countries. Additionally, this database features a list of practice-based research projects that examine the intersection of migration and religion in the EU context. Finally, the third section of the database collects information on recent and relevant publications rooted in local practices that reflect the interaction between migration and religious diversity.
