Dr. Salim Turkay Nefes (Institute for Public Goods and Policies, Spanish National Research Council (Madrid, Spain) visited the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Istanbul Technical University (Turkey), to implement the Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) on Turkish Jews’ perceptions of other non-Muslim minorities and migrants.

This STSM aimed to develop a social scientific understanding of how non-Muslim minorities in Turkey—specifically Greeks and Jews—perceive the recent migration of Muslims, particularly Afghans and Syrians.

Dr. Nefes will design a new study on these minorities’ views. The activities implemented during the scientific mission were vital in preparing this research. STSM will also help to launch this important study, addressing the lack of academic work on the political and social attitudes of Turkey’s non-Muslim minorities. All in all, according to Dr. Nefes, this STSM provided a valuable opportunity to advance scholarship on migration and minority studies.

What is a Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) within COREnet?

A Short-Term Scientific Mission, funded by the COST Action COREnet, consists of a visit to a host organization located in a different country to the country of affiliation of a Researcher in order to carry out specific work as part of a research project. In addition to research purposes, Short Term Scientific Missions (STSMs) are aimed to support researchers’ individual mobility, to strengthen existing networks and to foster collaboration between individuals. The purpose of a STSM is thus to gain new partnerships, to learn new techniques and to gain access to specific data, instruments and/or methods not available in their own institutions/organizations.
