COST Action COREnet member Prof. Tuomas Martikainen from the University of Turku, Finland, visited Dipartimento di Culture, Politica e Società at the University of Turin during this Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) funded by COST Action COREnet.
The STSM was set up to plan for a handbook on religion, migration and diversity in Europe, as well as to find suitable European funding for future cooperation. In addition, Prof. Martikainen planned the usual networking with fellow academics and a visit to a local religious NGO. The host of the STSM, Prof. Roberta Ricucci, is an Italian scholar specialising in the sociology of migration and sociology of Islam. The University of Turin is one of Italy’s largest research universities.
In addition to planned activities, Prof. Martikainen visited a Catholic NGO (UPM – Ufficio Pastorale Migranti) and learned about its activities with migrants in Turin, as well as met with several colleagues working on religion, migration and diversity in Italy.

What is a Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) within COREnet?
A Short-Term Scientific Mission, funded by the COST Action COREnet, consists of a visit to a host organization located in a different country to the country of affiliation of a Researcher in order to carry out specific work as part of a research project. In addition to research purposes, Short Term Scientific Missions (STSMs) are aimed to support researchers’ individual mobility, to strengthen existing networks and to foster collaboration between individuals. The purpose of a STSM is thus to gain new partnerships, to learn new techniques and to gain access to specific data, instruments and/or methods not available in their own institutions/organizations.
