COST Action “Connecting Theory and Practical Issues of Migration and Religious Diversity” (COREnet) PhD Summer School will be held in Vienna, Austria, at the University of Vienna (Vienna Doctoral School for Theology and Religious Studies) on July 12-16, 2023.

The topic of this year’s training school is “Religious and Non-Religious Narratives on Migration”. Narratives on migration play a crucial role in public discourses and have a significant impact on the perception and treatment of migrants and on the development of social and political measures to deal with migration.

Therefore, the aim of the COREnet PhD Summer School is to discuss and identify what religious and non-religious narratives can contribute to contemporary challenges in the field of migration from an interdisciplinary academic perspective. The COREnet PhD Summer School will provide early career researchers (PhDs and postdocs, and researchers up to 40 years old) with the opportunity to discuss and deepen their knowledge and understanding of interdisciplinary research on religious and non-religious narratives on migration.

International academic teachers from Austria, Lithuania, Serbia, Portugal, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Switzerland, Turkey and the Republic of South Africa will present both Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and interfaith perspectives on migration as well as religious and social science approaches to the politication of religion in migration narratives, migration narratives in literature and, last but not least, narratives of refugees and migrants themselves.

The five-day summer school programme is full of exciting lectures, valuable discussions, research project presentations, and meetings with local stakeholders from Vienna to better understand the religious and non-religious narratives on migration.

Testimonials from participants of the COREnet PhD Summer School

Take a look at the feedback from the participants of the COREnet PhD Summer School 2022 held in Kaunas:

The school was beneficial in the sense that participants were given very thought-provoking insights from the experts in the field.”
Hadi Farahani, PhD candidate, University of Eastern Finland

In the COREnet training school, I deepened my understanding of the current migration-related challenges imposed by the war and why it is essential to pay attention to the role of religious communities during such times. The training school also gave me an opportunity to present my research and reflect on the different stages of its progress. I received valuable interdisciplinary feedback from the COREnet instructors and other participants. The training school was engaging theoretically and practically since there was a good balance between lectures and field trips.
Goda Cicenaite, PhD candidate, University of Iceland

What I liked the most: the very informative and inspiring presentations of the professors, the vivid discussions, the useful feedback on our research project, the nice people to meet, the beautiful city of Kaunas, the excellent organisation of the Summer University and the useful online platform.”
Zsófia Windischm, PhD candidate, University of Vienna
