Dr Jasna Miloševic Dordevic visited the Institute of Public Goods and Policies in Spain

Migration-related conspiracy beliefs. Are they mostly flooded by religious content? Dr Jasna Miloševic Dordevic from Singidunum University (Serbia) did interesting research to answer this question.  

Some key findings from the representative survey of the adult Serbian population:  

• Most endorsed conspiracy about migration is that politically powerful people have deliberately created a migration crisis and that migrants represent a threat to local people; 
• Conspiracy is generated by a shared structure of religious, political, contextual, economic and emotional misinformation about migrations and migrants;
• All three main variables (religious identity, social conservatism, anti-EU sentiment) were significant predictors of conspiracy beliefs about migration and migrants; 
• Being conservative and religious led to a higher likelihood of believing in a conspiracy about migrants and migration; 
• Supporting the EU predicted a lower likelihood of believing such conspiracies; 
• Being in the middle class and a male was a significant predictor of not believing in conspiracy theories about migrants and migration.  

Jasna finalized her research during a short-term scientific mission funded by this COST Action. The host institution of the STSM – The Institute of Public Goods and Policies (IPP) at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
