DESCRIPTION:COST Action COREnet PhD Training School “Communication in Practice-Based Research. Connecting Stakeholders and Perspectives in the Study of Religious Diversity and Migration“. \nResearch on religious diversity and migration often addresses sensitive topics that can impact participants and interested parties in profound ways. Migrants and religious minorities typically face vulnerabilities in asserting their (social) interests and in their representation in the media. This vulnerability also manifests in public discourse surrounding these groups. The current polarized political climate and the rise of right-wing populist parties in an increasing number of countries in Europe and beyond complicate this situation. On one hand\, research-based knowledge is more essential than ever to provide objectivity in emotionally charged debates. On the other hand\, the heated nature of discussions can lead to the denigration and misuse of research ideas and projects. Researchers and research participants alike may risk being mocked\, antagonized\, or experiencing other negative reactions due to their involvement in this work. Furthermore\, researchers have an important responsibility to critically analyze public conversations about religion and migration. Kavolis Transdisciplinary Research Institute are organising an international conference titled “Religion\, Migration\, and Conflicts in Polarized Societies” on June 30 – July 4\, 2025\, at Vytautas Magnus University\, Kaunas\, Lithuania. \nTopic of the conference \nWe live in a globalized world shaped by migration\, geopolitical crises\, and social polarization. Religion is closely entangled with these changes. SUMMARY:Webinar. Polarised Narratives on Migration Debates: Insights from Topic and Contextual Analysis Approaches
DESCRIPTION:Debates on migration are highly polarised in Europe. Such divisions manifest themselves in debates about migration policy and the broader societal implications of welcoming migrants. In this sense\, Europe has seen a rising tide of anti-immigrant rhetoric that frames migration in existential terms as a question of national identity. Perceptions of cultural distance – such as differences in religion or lifestyle – are thus crucial in either accepting or rejecting migrants. Political and public discourses often frame migration as a challenge linked to issues such as ‘border closures’\, ‘illegal immigration’\, ‘cultural threats’ and ‘labour market concerns’. By analysing the language and framing techniques used in political and public discourse\, it is possible to uncover the underlying priorities and ideologies that shape discussions on this pressing issue. Advanced analytical techniques can be used to achieve these aims. Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) is used to identify key themes in political and public discourse\, exploring issues such as economic impacts\, environmental challenges and national security concerns. While BERT models are also used to analyse the relationship between migration and broader ideological factors\, including religion\, nationalism and cultural patriotism. This nuanced approach reveals subtle biases and ideological positions embedded in policy discussions\, providing a comprehensive understanding of how migration is debated and prioritised. SUMMARY:Webinar. From Invisibility to Presence: TCN Parents’ Struggles for Access to State Education in Malta – Methodological challenges of conducting research with a vulnerable migrant group
DESCRIPTION:Over the past decade\, Malta has experienced an unprecedented surge in its migrant population\, which now constitutes approximately one-fifth of the total population (NSO\, 2024). Despite the nation’s economic dependence on migrant labour\, migrants are often perceived as a burden—largely due to the strain they place on infrastructure that has not expanded in tandem with population growth. Migration policies reflect this tension: while the labour of migrant workers is welcomed\, their families are often treated as “discardable populations” (de Sousa\, 2006\, p. 18)\, likely because they are viewed as non-productive. \nA growing number of third-country national (TCN) parents report that their children are being denied access to state education\, with some children remaining out of school for over a year. This issue remains under-researched\, and this study may be one of the first to examine the systematic denial of educational access for TCN children. Accordingly\, it is framed as an exploratory investigation aimed at gaining an in-depth understanding of the lived experiences of TCN parents as they attempt to enrol their children in state schools. \nAn open-ended\, qualitative approach was adopted to explore the specific socio-political context in which these parents are operating. Estimates suggest that around 500 children may be affected by this issue. However\, recruiting participants proved challenging and necessitated the use of intermediaries. SUMMARY:Webinar. The Impact of Values in Conspiracy Theory Beliefs About Migration in Serbia
DESCRIPTION:Immigrants are frequent targets of conspiracy theories\, yet the topic remains underexplored in academic research. Addressing this gap\, the study examines conspiracy theory beliefs about migrants and immigration in contemporary Serbia\, employing quantitative study to explore the role of political\, social\, and religious values in shaping these beliefs. \nUsing a stratified three-stage probability sampling procedure\, 1\,199 adult Serbian citizens (aged 18+) participated in face-to-face interviews conducted in July 2022. The research adopted a practice-based approach by engaging respondents in structured yet dynamic interviews designed to capture nuanced perspectives on migration and conspiracy theories. Sampling involved polling station territories\, random route selection of households\, and random selection of individuals within households\, with an average interview duration of 20 minutes. These participatory methods ensured that the data reflected lived experiences and grounded beliefs\, providing actionable insights for real-world application. \nThe findings reveal a statistically significant relationship between individuals’ political\, social\, and religious values and their susceptibility to conspiracy theories about migration. The results underscore the need for value-based\, community-centred approaches to counteract conspiracy theories and promote informed public discourse. \nThese findings can guide policymakers\, educators\, and civil society organizations in developing targeted interventions that address underlying value systems and foster resilience against misinformation\, ultimately contributing to social cohesion and mutual understanding. \nPublished in: Nefes\, T. DESCRIPTION:In an era where migration continues to reshape European societies\, interreligious dialogue (IRD) emerges as a key tool for fostering social cohesion and countering divisive narratives. \nThis webinar will explore how grassroots IRD initiatives in Austria\, Croatia\, and Serbia engage with religious diversity among refugees and migrants. \nWhile Austria has a long history of institutionalized IRD\, Croatia and Serbia have primarily seen such efforts emerge informally\, often tied to humanitarian initiatives. Despite different migration histories—Austria as a destination country\, Croatia and Serbia as transit or emigration countries—public discourse in all three nations has framed migration as a security threat\, limiting inclusive approaches to diversity. \nThe discussion will highlight how faith-based organizations and local actors work to bridge divides\, facilitate dialogue\, and support migrant inclusion. In Austria\, interreligious initiatives are integrated into state and civil society frameworks\, while in Croatia and Serbia\, religious engagement remains sporadic and lacks institutional backing. \nHowever\, grassroots efforts and interfaith community projects demonstrate the potential of IRD to shape more inclusive societies. This webinar will examine how IRD can contribute to changing stereotypes\, promoting coexistence\, and building trust in diverse societies and how bottom-up initiatives\, which representatives of different organizations will share\, can inspire academic research and contribute to reshaping existing narratives. SUMMARY:Webinar. A Relational Approach to Biographical and Participant Observation Methodologies in Exploring the Labour Market Inclusion of Migrant Muslim Women
DESCRIPTION:This research aims to investigate how interreligious dialogue can enhance the labour market inclusion of migrant Muslim women and\, subsequently\, to underscore the necessity of a relational approach in demonstrating the role and significance of interreligious dialogue and intercultural exchange in this process. It demonstrates that interreligious dialogue and intercultural mediation function as relational goods\, fostering inclusive economic participation. By employing biographical and participant observation methodologies and applying P. Donati’s relational approach to data analysis\, the study explores how the faith-based organisation of the Community of Sant’Egidio facilitates the economic and social integration of migrants and refugees in Italy. \nThe findings indicate that the Community of Sant’Egidio actively creates and promotes spaces for intercultural exchange\, including language and vocational courses\, as well as holiday celebrations that honour participants’ religious and cultural identities\, with the involvement of intercultural mediators. For instance\, the Economia Domestica course not only equips migrant Muslim women with vocational skills but also provides cultural insights into Italian social norms and lifestyles\, including traditions of food consumption. This reflects an effort to enhance the capacity of migrant Muslim women to balance their religious practices with labour market demands. SUMMARY:Webinar. Polarised Narratives on Migration Debates: Insights from Topic and Contextual Analysis Approaches
DESCRIPTION:Debates on migration are highly polarised in Europe. Such divisions manifest themselves in debates about migration policy and the broader societal implications of welcoming migrants. In this sense\, Europe has seen a rising tide of anti-immigrant rhetoric that frames migration in existential terms as a question of national identity. Perceptions of cultural distance – such as differences in religion or lifestyle – are thus crucial in either accepting or rejecting migrants. Political and public discourses often frame migration as a challenge linked to issues such as ‘border closures’\, ‘illegal immigration’\, ‘cultural threats’ and ‘labour market concerns’. \nBy analysing the language and framing techniques used in political and public discourse\, it is possible to uncover the underlying priorities and ideologies that shape discussions on this pressing issue. Advanced analytical techniques can be used to achieve these aims. Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) is used to identify key themes in political and public discourse\, exploring issues such as economic impacts\, environmental challenges and national security concerns. While BERT models are also used to analyse the relationship between migration and broader ideological factors\, including religion\, nationalism and cultural patriotism. \nThis nuanced approach reveals subtle biases and ideological positions embedded in policy discussions\, providing a comprehensive understanding of how migration is debated and prioritised. DESCRIPTION:A co-hosted webinar between the International Dialogue Centre – KAICIID and COREnet\, COST Action EU Project “Connecting Theory and Practical Issues of Migration and Religious Diversity” (COREnet). \nMarking and commemorating International Migrants Day\, this webinar aims to showcase different perspectives from experts who are working in the field of migrant education and interreligious and intercultural dialogue\, highlighting challenges\, but also good practices\, innovative and creative methodologies which contribute to inclusive education policies. \nRefugees and migrants often face barriers in accessing quality education and social inclusion due to cultural\, linguistic\, religious identity and other systemic challenges. These barriers can lead to feelings of isolation and reinforce societal divides. Religious leaders can have a key role in addressing these challenges and joining forces with policymakers\, teachers\, academia and civil society to help combating prejudices\, foster intercultural and interreligious dialogue\, and contribute to inclusive education for refugees and migrants in Europe. DESCRIPTION:The topic of the COREnet PhD Summer School 2024 is “Intersecting Gender\, Religion and Migration in Contemporary Society”. \nThe globalized world\, climate change and geopolitical realities create the social and political conditions for the increase of migration in contemporary societies which is influenced by sex\, gender\, gender identity\, sexual orientation as well as religion and beliefs. Migration of vulnerable social groups requests state’s and other social institutions responses\, among them is religion\, too. On the one hand\, religion provides networks and social support for migrating individuals and their groups. On the other hand\, religion is one of the factors defining and creating boundaries concerning who is accepted or denied participation in the imagined community. SUMMARY:Webinar. Sharing the Migration Experiences of Young Syrian Women in Kilis
DESCRIPTION:This webinar includes a part of the research from the book of Murat Yarimay\, who works as a social worker within Kilis Municipality\, and a part of COREnet member Duygu Altinoluk’s research on migration and Syrian women\, an area she has been working on for three years. \nWe aim to see how young Syrian women in Kilis\, which borders the Syrian city of Aleppo\, rebuild their lives in Turkey. We are opening a discussion by seeking answers to basic questions such as what Syrian women face and what they have difficulty with within Turkey\, which is governed by a republic with a different regime from Syria. Turkey\, one end of the Middle East\, moved towards the West and became a secular country under the influence of the Republic. Although the last government emphasized the extreme right and Islamism\, the impact of the Republic’s achievements and human rights and freedoms on women is inevitable.
