“Since 2001, we have been organising and coordinating civic engagement for refugee families and asylum seekers living in Heidelberg on behalf of the city of Heidelberg. The Office for Social Affairs and Senior Citizens of the City of Heidelberg supports the Asylum Working Group with an annual grant.

We support refugees in Heidelberg in all aspects of their new life in this city. Our work consists of many activities – German courses, free tutoring, leisure activities (music, excursions, gardening and much more), legal advice, integration into the labour market and more.”

“Since autumn 2014, the Intercultural Centre has been supported by the City of Heidelberg and is part of Department V for Culture, Citizen Services and Creative Industries. The municipal sponsorship enables the Intercultural Centre to act as a neutral platform with strong civil society involvement.
The IZ is particularly active in intercultural work and the networking of target groups. With professionalisation workshops, participation formats and a varied programme of events, the IZ is aimed at people with and without a history of migration.
The IZ is always committed to national and international cultural exchange with the aim of promoting international understanding and tolerance. The content of the IZ’s work has therefore also been supported by the state, for example ‘Heidelberg reads new world literature’, and by the federal government, for example ‘We are Heidelberg’.”
