Mission:
With the flare-up of the civil war in Syria, and with it the opening of the so-called Balkan route, which included the territory of the Republic of North Macedonia in June 2015, and the influx of a massive wave of refugees on the southern border, the Red Cross of the city of Skopje as an implementer of The national program for aid and support of refugees and migrants under the CRSM, started with the formation of the first mobile teams for humanitarian assistance to persons on the move, thus with the official opening of the two transit-acceptance centers on the northern and southern borders, the teams for support of institutionally cared for persons, which support continued during the coming years.
According to the statistical data from 2015 and 2016, as well as during the following years, the Red Cross of the city of Skopje, through the mobile teams in the two transit centers, but also with the establishment of a special team in charge of humanitarian assistance to irregular migration on the northern border of the RSM, provided assistance to nearly one million refugees and migrants, as an adequate response to reduce the vulnerability of people on the move with help and support through medical first aid, distribution of hot meals, blankets, promotion of hygiene, psycho-social assistance and establishment of family ties.
The mobile teams that work in the two reception-transit centers as well as in the Lipkovo Mobile Team are composed of general practitioners, translators from the speaking areas characteristic of the countries from which the people on the move come, as well as logisticians, which ensures 24-hour continuous support with transports to general hospitals and institutions working with migrants and refugees cared for in RSM. The implementation of the national program is supported by the Swiss Red Cross, NGO Caritas, as well as other donors.
Of course, with the crisis that engulfed the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, from 2021, the Red Cross of the city of Skopje also started implementing a project for humanitarian assistance to evacuees from Afghanistan who continue to reside in several facilities on the territory of the RSM.
The help and support to these persons is implemented in cooperation with donor organizations, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Health, as well as UNICEF, the International Organization for Migration and the Macedonian Association of Young Lawyers.
